I'd suggest your sister walk into any Trek or Specialized dealer, and test ride a few. Chances are, she'll be better off doing her own shopping than listening to any of us snobs. "Low end parts" don't concern me. Many of my customers and I have had many happy miles with various Alivio, Sora, and Tiagra components. Anyway, a $600 hybrid is likely to have mid-level Deore-ish parts. Plenty of high end Rivendells running around with Deore hubs and derailleurs.
