The riv video way is the way I've always done it when I rode drops ("cheater
strips" at the brake clamps and starting from the ends and finishing at the
stem, then twine or tape). Trying to work with cloth around the brakes without
using the strips a PIA or next to impossible (at least for my limited skills).
There are multiple ways to deal with bar tape though. Two separate strips going
opposite ways and finishing at the brake lever, harlequin patterns with
two-tone tape or the same color, etc. I've also started at the stem and
finished at the bar ends wrh some success but that takes work and trial and
error to secure with the barend shifter--and still leaves the brake covering
challenge. I think that this is one of things that doesn't have just one
correct answer.
