Chainline - exactly. On my old Raleigh, I have 6-speed rear and
Cyclotouriste triple, half-steps (47/42) plus escape (26). Between all
that, I have 15 gears all spaced about 4 inches apart, and I shift most
often between the half steps on the FD, until I get to serious elevation
change. The bike flies and is a joy to ride.

For my daughter's new road bike built on an old Fuji frame -
https://plus.google.com/u/0/109016132995287077684/posts Summer Project - I
re-used an old Nuovo Record crankset (52/41) and built the widest 9-speed
cassette I could based on a Miche. 13-29 was the best I could do, and
we're both happy with it. It doesn't function at extremes of bad chainline
- and it doesn't need to.
