Thanks all! I just got back from all the ride my nutty noggin could handle today, with fantastic news. Twisting the barrels (I did both ends) worked! So, at least for now, that takes care of the issue. I'll have to have someone who knows what they're doing snug up the cables as I used up most of the slack in the barrels, but I'm good to go.
