Hang on to the handlebars tightly, but keep your elbows and shoulders loose to absorb the bumps.
On washboard, just let the bars vibrate. If you try to hold on tight all that vibration is going to go into your body.
Beware of wet grass because I have had my rear wheel pass me when I transferred my weight to the pedals from the saddle.
You can get that same feeling on a hard base covered with 1 or 2 cm of loose gravel.
