I ride a '95 Independent Fabrication mtb with studded tires during the northern Idaho winters. The rear wheel has an WI ENO (eccentric) hub for use as a single speed and I've found fixed winter riding to be exhilarating and sobering all at the same time. In summer the tires get switched out and the wheel flipped to the freewheel threaded side for dedicated mtb use.
When it snows the deep lugs of the tires are a necessity. Then the snow gets packed or there's black ice, the studs are a necessity.
