I agree that the mitts-without-thumbs are dumb. Not even sure about the mitts when you can get good gloves that are more effective, smaller, and that cost no more or even less.
But I like the wind shield idea, if not necessarily the product. My own take on it is to chop the body away from a wool turtleneck, leaving only the neck and a flap that extends from the shoulders -- slightly over the shoulders -- to the bottom of the chest. I find this very useful as a shield for throat that provides a bit of insulation for the upper chest and that can be worn on those kinda/kinda days when you don't want a full layer underneath or over. These are easy to remove -- just pull them over your head. Far less dorky than wearing one over your shirt.
