There are tons of really cheap $100 - $200 tandems on craigslist. I just bought a 1969 Schwinn Twinn for $125. Obviously this isn't an event grade bike but my girlfriend and I have had a good time playing around with it in the city.
I would suggest you consider picking up something inexpensive at first to make sure you both enjoy riding together.
