True, but those things help a beginner, rather as indexing helps a tyro cyclist. I no longer measure when I make bread (and I get very good results just by "feel" alone), but when I started, I certainly needed a recipe.
As to the degree of obsession, I suppose I am half-way between "don't really care" and "spend a lot of time thinking about it". This morning's experiment with the press gave coffee that, at least, was not sour and that tasted good; but it was a bit weak for my taste. Brew #2 OTOH was a bit bitter -- I stirred more on the second pot. Will continue to experiment.
