Doug, Most hobby shops have those "metal" displays, with piano wire, right? They go up in size to 1/4" if you look closely.
The local shop provided enough metal for a couple of the springs. For the rest, I went to Eastern Spring down in the shipyard here in Halifax and got a dozen lengths of 1/4" spring steel.
