Hi Chris
Traverse: How about a drill motor, powering a wheel at the back? Or a
cheap electric screwdriver? Or a geared toy?

Elevate: The same; you can have it going continuously up-down to avoid
the need to change direction.

Trigger: How about a bowden cable? Just don't get too close!

Guards: Neil made some out of a plastic disc "head" mounted on a piece
of plastic piping. Good cos you could shoot the head off!
