I have noticed that everyone controlling the tanks are very very close

?

it all about perspective! when they drive their tanks around obstacles
such as trees, bushes, other tanks, buildings and the likes, the best way to
do it is from standing near the tank so you can see 360 degrees around the
tank giving you a better chance of driving your tank without hitting
anything and also help with the aiming of your tank's shots as they fly.

if you were standing a few feet/meters from the tank, it changes your
perspective of things.

think of it as shooting a gun. you don't take a hand gun hold your arm
straight out and then turn your hand to one side and then shooting it, hoping
you hit something. your aim will always be off, but, if you hold it
straight out in front of you, you can aim it better, increasing your chances of

hitting your mark.

to me, it's all about perspective - at least that's my reasoning.
