It really has to be some sort of skin like cap there that corresponds to the 
wall of the hull.  There are ball bearings behind this gap.

  Since I am very low-tech when it comes to building techniques, I personally 
would do some short of piece of wood or metal on the inside of the hull that 
blocks the hole and then fill the outside gap with Bondo or something similar 
using the inner piece as a backer.  But that is just me.
