From what I've read, the unusual behavior of the "Search this group"
button has been a mystery for over a year and the Google Groups
developers have not responded to any queries about it. The "Search
Groups" button works just like the main search button, so entering the
qualifier "group:rctankcombat" to your queries when using that button
will do exactly what you would expect from the world's biggest and best
search engine.

Having been a software designer/developer/team leader for over 25 years,
it looks to me like the developer(s) responsible for the "Search this
group" button simply dropped the ball (they probably think they've
"improved" on the regular approach) and the issue hasn't yet risen to a
level where management will correct the mistake.

Still, given that everything is free and available 24/7 with virtually
unlimited space and bandwidth, I guess we can't complain too much :-)

Hmmmm ... no. Google doesn't delete anything. Google *is* their own
ISP (their systems are bigger than most ISPs combined). Everything
we've ever posted to the mailing list is not only still stored on their
servers, but those messages will be there as long as Google exists. In
fact, when Google pulled the old Usenet groups into their world, they
created an archive of basically every public message that has ever been
posted since well before they existed or even the "Internet" existed.
Usenet messages go back to the days when most mailing lists used UUCP
(Unix-to-Unix Copy Program) to transport messages from one university or
research lab to another using 2400-baud modems. Our rather trivial
collection of messages since 2007 is no storage concern for them.

In 100 hundred years, some info-archeology student will find this sole
reference to UUCP associated with R/C Tank Combat and write a thesis
about it, if they still even "write" things in those days. Good luck
future student ... we'll try to leave you some good things to read and
ponder.
