There are smaller, more affordable full function r/c tanks (im sure youve seen them) that use infa red beams, or even 6mm bbs to to battle. In major cities there are often small clubs that battle these tanks indoors a couple nights a month. They usually meet at hobby or comic book shops so i'd ask around. I personaly agree with cold coomfort, mens magazines would probably drum up some limited interest...if you could get them to take some photos at one of the larger battles. You might even get to meet some pin up types:)
