You don't have to be that old to be using computers *before* the Internet. I was using my Dad's 8088 processor machine running at 4Mhz and 7Mhz in "turbo mode" with a 1200bps modem "surfing" the bulletin boards. I'm only 36. I would agree that a if a local store that is competative must have a web presence. There were probably many ATV dealers that had a good deal on the ATV that I was looking at, but I bought it from the dealer I knew for a fact had it in stock. I knew they had in stock because I saw it on their website first and followed up with a phone call. My shopping hours rarely match up with store hours. I want to shop when I want to shop and not when some store thinks I need to shop. ;) I guess I try to look at the whole picture. If a shop can get the item for realatively the same price + or -, I will buy it from them. If there is a huge descrepency in price, I will buy it from the one that has the lower price. Having run a retail business and dealt with customers, I refuse to dicker on price for an item I have found cheaper online (cars and jewelery are an exception). People used to do it to me all the time and I hated it. For the most part, I had very little control over prices. Volume determines price in most cases. In our pharmacy, if I didn't make at least 17% profit on a product I lost money on that item. I had employees, a heat bill, a phone bill, a loan payment, wholesaler payments, etc. Did we sell stuff under cost? Hell yes, but (and it's a big but) we had to make up those losses in other ways. Insurance companies would pay us under our cost for some medications. Don't ask how they can do that, just know that they can and they do. We would continue to do business with that insurance company because what if that person had 5 other medications we did make a profit on? If we told them we wouldn't fill the one we lost money on, they would take all of their business elsewhere. I do agree with Frank that a business must evolve to survive, but that evolution is not completely up to the business owner. Many outside factors can hinder a business from making changes. It's not always just a matter of want or need.
