The trim vane is the wooden (on the M113) panel that normally lays
flat against the glacis, and is hinged at the bottom.  When you go
swimming, you fold it out so it's kind of a boat prow so that
hydrodynamic forces on the glacis don't tend to push the nose down
while you're swimming.  I'll try to find a pic, it's a lot clearer
visually.
