In my opinion, the turret is the most complex subsystem in the tank. Getting the marker, trigger mechanism or electronics, elevate, CO2, and paintball feed in that confined space takes a lot of planning and prototyping. Some people choose to mount their traverse motor in the turret, too. For my new tank, I built the turret first.

No use building a hull and then finding it is 0.2" too narrow. Battery needs to fit but it's a bit easier as it's a simple shape and it doesn't matter where it goes within limits. Ideally one would plan it first, then buy all the bits, then assemble it, but life isn't usually like that. Yuo also have to sort out the tracks and the final drive at an early stage.
