I use PVC sheet, but it is expensive over wood.  I have used 1/2" and 1/4"
panels, but I think you could end up with the same strength using 1/4" and
3/8" sheets.  1/2" sheets are just easier to drill into due to the thickness
IMHO.  I always screw mine together before glueing them.
