I think buying geared motor is worth the extra cost.  A lot of us use these
like in my Sturmtiger:

My personal favorite would be these that I use in the KV-2 and the M113:

The later is a little harder to mount, but is also smaller.  Since they are
already geared down, there is no need to further gear them down.  I think it
was Frank that said that he dropped 9lbs. of weight by eliminating the need
for his EV gearbox by replacing them with geared motors.  Correct me if I'm
wrong.  The added cost will be somewhat offset by the fact that if you need
to gear a motor down you will have to buy additional sprockets, bearings,
shafts, and chains/belts.  Plus there is a frustration factor eliminated of
having to construct a working gear down gearbox (personally I seem to
problems getting holes to line up when I make things like gearboxes).  If
you look at it that way, it's a no brainer IMHO.
