If he is based in Australia, that's even better for Postage to NZ. Postage around the South Pacific area seems to be less expensive than from the US or UK.

when ever i have to ship across the pond, i only ship it first class (unless other wise asked) as even that can be costly (and the box doesn't weigh over 4 pounds), not including insurance. i think when the box gets to be over 4 pounds and you have to use that 7 page (+ or -?) form, they automatically tack on a few dollars more and that's before you find out what the shipping is.
 
I know getting something shipped from across the pond isn't cheap either
