Hi Brian If you can find a timing belt big enough and can make it work then go ahead. You can use whatever you want so long as it complies with the scale/length requirements on the site. If you've looked at our tanks (mine are T055 & T057,the latter of which is nearly operational) you'll see we are not exactly into heavy realism.
Will the belt be teeth side out (mucho grip) or teeth in (no slippage?) Welcome to the hobby for you and your son!
