A lot of batteries that are removed from UPS check good with a voltmeter but 
once you put a load they cant supply any amps. Those small batteries can be 
deceptive they will draw some current when charging but went put under the load 
of a tank just die. The solder test is a quick way to test the battery.

your suggesting some does what??
 
just try a electric motor on them (will be safer), but he really won't know 
after that until he gets them hooked up to a charger and tries charging them
