Alligator clips are not recommended.  Most people use Anderson
PowerPole connectors in the appropriate amperage rating:

I went a different route and bolted trimmed down "Ground Bus Bars" to
my battery terminals and and direct wire to the batteries:

The bus bars are available the same place you've been buying your
circuit breakers for a few bucks.  You can see the concept in this

This method is more compact than the Anderson connectors but takes a
little more time to replace a battery.
