If you have your tracks (which it sounds like you do) your sprocket design is
done for you. All you have to decide is how many teeth/how big you want the
sprocket - bear in mind that the two are directly related as your tooth size is
already determined by the track. How big is the gap between track pads?

For my M113 I designed and built the tracks, then extrapolated the sprocket
from that, and drew them both to make sure I hadn't missed the mark, including
2mm of "give" in the space for the track pad to sit in the sprocket.

See this animation that I made to test the engagement:

This is a sketch i made showing roughly what I want to build and also shows why
I cant simply print it out and cut round it , its bigger than A4 paper. I have
a new idea that follows one of Dave Mansons tutorials, (the 2/5 Sherman fella).
What i do want from the group is what shape tooth design would work best for
the track pad shown at the top of the drawing , The track pad is comprised of
a 1mm thick X 76mm steel plate then 3mm treadmill belt then 18mm thick X 76mm
ply pad. the Faint inner circle inside the octagon is 203mm in Diameter. the
angle of the tooth is about 60 degrees from each flat edge of the octagon. each
tooth has a 30mm base and a 15mm top edge.
Im now thinking these teeth could be a little small allowing them to jump out
of the pad slots when forced. I dont really know.
I know that the track pads are a little on the wide side at 3" but that was the
size the 1mm steel plates are manufactured, so i was stuck with it.

I hope my file format is universal

If you know the dimensions of your track, sprocket drawing is easy.

Is your sketch more about how the sprocket looks, or is it supposed to be
measurement based for tooth design? Tooth design is determined largely by your
track and track pad dimensions.

Thank you gentlemen .

Pete I may be able to achieve what i want with that program but I want
a sprocket not a cog. , I`ll draw and scan a sketch to show what I
intend to do with this sprocket. I dont want to mess up this part of
the build, I built my suspension arms without any advice and Im not
all together happy with them.

Scott I`ll post my sketch asap if you can redraw it so it is perfect,
I`ll be very happy.

Once i have a perfectly symmetrical drawing of the sprocket I plan to
make a master out of plywood and from that make a mold. if this goes
to plan I will be able to make many sprockets out of fiberglass. as
they wear out I`ll make new ones.

thanks everyone Neil R
