The problem with SLA is that even when not used, they will slowly loose 
capacity over time.  Clark, the submarine battery guy, can explain the details 
why this happens better than I can.

If I assume 24 charge cycles /year (1 warship or tank battle per month 
averaging 2 days each) and I get 1000 charge cycles in my SLA per Mikes 
estimate below, my SLAs will last about 42 years.    I don't think that I'll 
last 42 years, so my SLAs are good for life.
