If you find yourself needing more than the free version of sketchup, don't bother buying the pro version. It's something like $500 bucks, and for that price you can get a good proper CAM package like Alibre that offers all that sketchup has and more for a similar price. You'll probably have to look around for others, but sketchup is on the lower end of the 3d modeling spectrum, so you can buy much better if you put your mind to it.
Among the other advantages to Alibre is that it's parametric. "Features" are extruded from "sketches" like in Solidworks(it's got a very similar user interface). The program remembers the dimensions used and if changes to those dimensions are made, the whole model changes accordingly, whereas in sketchup to change a line length you have to delete the line and redraw it at the new length. Sketchup is great for a free program and for simple stuff but depending on how much of the tank you're going to model, and how much of it you'll be modeling, a proper CAD program can make a world of difference in how easy it is. -- -- You are currently subscribed to the "R/C Tank Combat" group.
