That piece of plywood was clamped to the drill press table and not removed 
until I was done with the drilling.  The 5/8" hole was drilled, the dowel 
glued in place, a wheel was set over the dowel (to keep it square to the 
plywood until the glue set).  This ensured the dowel was dead center to the 
drill chuck for the later drilling.

FYI, It's for operations like this that I ended up dumping the previous 
Harbor Freight bench drill press and acquired the current Craftsman floor 
standing unit.  The old bench drill press would not have been that accurate 
due to flexing of its itty-bitty table.  Another FYI for those thinking of 
getting a floor drill press.  I didn't think this 70's vintage Craftsman 
that I have now would compare to the 90's vintage Delta that I had in my 
old workshop, but IMO the Craftsman is a much better drill.  Long story 
short, If you can find an older Craftsman in good shape, it's definitely 
worth looking at.
