Welcome to the hobby.  The circuit you highlight might have been a good 
option in 1995 but was outright vintage in 2005 (when the article was 
published).   Technology has marched on and prices have dropped on 
off-the-shelf solutions.  For a more reliable option (and at the same price 
point) consider getting a couple of Talon controllers.  No intermediate 
ESC's will be required.
