Neil, There are many types of lithium based batteries that have a good price tag. My favorite are LiFePo4 cells also known as just "LiFe" cells. They have a 3.2-3.4v operating voltage. Look at batteryspace.com to get an idea of the various capacities and discharge rates available. Also there is a type of LiFe cell known as a Headway cell it is a blue cylinder. They tend to have higher discharge ratings than the prismatic "bricks". LiFe cells are less voltage, temperature, moisture, and impact sensitive than other lithium types.
