Besides the cool factor, there are a couple practical elements to the 
curves.  Since this is being designed for lasercut ply, the curves define 
the shape using the shortest possible line (laser cutting is priced by cut 
length). The curves also make it easier to finish the edges off.  The 
intent is to wrap the edge of the piece with glass cloth (or your fabric of 
choice) and adhesive of choice.  This is a powered remote controlled device 
hence the battery connection.
