Based on discussion here, I've sent this message to the MARC e-list. Mac

McRee Elrod) To: [email protected] Subject: Media terms for kits The has been a discussion on the RDA-L which has relevance to MARC. RDA has no content or carrier term for kits (which it should IMNSHO). Instead we are told to use multiple 336-338 terms. But there is no easy way to associate particular terms in that triad. For example, a kit containing a book, a DVD, and CD, would have: 336 $atext$2rdacontent 336 $amoving image$2rdacontent 336 $aspoken word$2rdacontent 337 $aunmediated$2rdamedia 337 $avideo$2rdamedia 337 $aaudio$2rdamedia 338 $avolume$2rdacarrier 338 $avideodisc$2rdacarrier 338 $aaudio disc$2rdacarrier This is very complex for a cataloguer to do, as well as no easy way to associate the correct three terms. If they were interspersed (336/337/338 three times) they would be rearranged in some systems*. Would the same 337 term be given three times if two or three components fell within the same media type? Two solutions occur to me. First, JSC might add "mixed" as an RDA content term, and "kit" as a carrier term. Second, media terms might be coded as subfields in a single field, e.g., 089 $aunmediated$bvolume$ctext$2rda 089 $cvideo$bvideodisc$cmoving image$2rda 089 $aaudio$baudio disc$cspoken word$2rda Thus maintaining the triad relationships. The use of 089 (added to 490 as a non local field with "9") would be in accord with ISBD Area 0, and have media terms display at head of descriptive data in systems which can only display in MARC tag order*. There was merit in Avram's idea of having MARC tagging reflect display order. *This problem should not brushed off as one of "system inadequacy". Many can not afford upgrades to their systems at this time. __ __ J.
