When not covered by the rules, consult "Chicago Manual of `Style",
which give the North American style,  

If the note is nothing but the quote, i.e., the note begins with a
quotation mark, the period is inside the final quote,  followed by the
dash and source.  If the note begins with other words (as in my first
sentence above), the period is outside the quote.  

It is not just US vs. UK.
