You could downgrade the local version to 0.13.4 (ie, Sarge's version), but you will need to remove at least the rdiff-backup-data director(y|ies) on the remote server. Using different versions of rdiff-backup at each end WILL cause problems and will create an (somewhat) unusable repository, hence the warning issued by rdiff-backup when you try to do this. Been there, done that, have T-shirt, and have spent a long time repairing the damage.
