Getting aggdraw to work with the notebook on the mac is difficult (or maybe
impossible... I think I did it once, but I haven't managed to repeat the
feat).
pycairo works fine though.

I installed py2cairo using homebrew:
~ > brew install py2cairo
   this takes a while and then outputs this:

For non-homebrew python (2.x), you need to amend your PYTHONPATH like so:
  export PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages:$PYTHONPATH

🍺  /usr/local/Cellar/py2cairo/1.10.0: 9 files, 172K, built in 5 seconds

after updating my PYTHONPATH as instructed above, things work fine and I
can get nice smooth renderings from the rdkit in the notebook.
