I think the issue is do you have "ground squirrels". This rodent is more closely related to marmots and prairie dogs, and is largely a terrestrial not an arboreal. It is also common in temperate climes, so the parts of upstate NY and NE that get -20 deg F cold snaps, probably doesn't have these critters.
If you only have arboreal squirrels (red, grey, whatever) you probably won't have a problem. - Peter Peter T.
