Hello August,

Physical failure and cosmetic shortcomings due to poor workmanship or materials
(delamination, encapsulant yellowing, etc.) are not included in the power
output warranty. If the module output is within warranty specifications, then
it meets the warranty terms. Otherwise, you have to wait until the module fails
or power output drops below warranty rating. There was a time when customers
could convince manufacturers that they will suffer loss of reputation if they
did not replace bad looking modules, but nowadays "parts is parts."

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Module Warranty

Hi Fellow Wrenches,

We're having a bit of an internal debate on the nitty gritty of module
warranties and I thought that some of you might be able to shed light on the
issue.

We're debating the nuances between the 20 or 25 year power output warranty and
the 1 to 10 year workmanship warranty. Obviously, each manufacturer has it's
differences but the main question that comes to mind is how is the warranty
handled after the workmanship warranty expires. Let's say a module's lamination
starts to fall apart at year 11 and the module therefore ceases to output any
power. This is an obvious workmanship issue but the result is that the power
output warranty is no longer met. What do you think would happen in this case?
Of course, we can dream up of all sorts of other examples but I'm trying to
define the hard difference between the workmanship and output warranties.

Any thoughts welcome!

Thanks,

August
