I know an electronics technician who has repaired
a couple of Trace inverters for us for a very
reasonable fee. Contact me off the list for his contact info.

You can replace the internal SW fans (if the fans themselves are the problem.)

BUT the replacement fans must draw approximately the same current as the
original fans because they are powered by a current source rather than voltage
source. i.e. If you use a fan that draws less
than the fan current, the voltage
could rise too high. Some 12V fans don't have a problem running at say,
20+ volts DC BTW so might not be that big of a deal.

Hi Mac

No don't recommend replacing internal fans

But I have installed external 120v muffin fans on the ends.
Seal up the vents around the ends so it pulls air through.
Hook the fans to the genny input.
Quick and works well

Hello Wrenches,

I recently assessed a 22 year old Trace
4024. During bulk charge mode, I noticed that
the charge would go from about 18A down to
5-6A every 15-20 seconds, and then repeat the
cycle. I observed this for about 5 minutes
relatively consistently I also noticed the
body of the 4024 was very hot, and I couldn't
feel a fan moving air through it.

I put a fan on it and blew air over the body
of the inverter, trying to direct it through
the machine. While I did that, I never
observed it drop out again over about 5
minutes, so I'm assuming that there is an
internal cooling fan that has gone out.

It's been quite a while since I opened one of
these up. Does anyone know what's involved in
replacing a cooling fan on one of these? Is
it worth it on a 22 year old inverter?

Thanks in advance
