I don't think I quite see the advantage of that plan. The HUPs do not
die with quick catastrophic failures like L16s often do. They usually
just slowly lose a little capacity each year, begin to use a bit more
water, and become a bit less efficient in charging. How old are the
HUPs and what are the symptoms that lead him to think they are on their
last legs?
As far as the charging 2 batteries scenario, I suppose you could set
that up with a relay controlled by a SOC meter. The Midnite Classic I
believe has that capability when used with their WhizBang Jr. Diversion
load is a possibility as you thought, but it just sounds like a lot of
trouble. He might get 5 more years from the HUPs, and by then the Li+
pricing will have dropped more.
If you do the 2 battery bank scenario, you also have to set up some
fairly high amp transfer switching, and figure out whether that would be
manual or automatic as well. The closest I've seen folks do that is
using a Marine type battery selector. It works, but no inspector is
going to ever let that fly. LEt us know what you come up with. I've
had a few customers want that over the years.

Dear people:
I have a customer with a solar array for his 24V system, Bergey Excel
10 wind genny, 12KW Kohler generator, two Outback controllers and two
FX inverters. He currently has a set of the Solar One SO-6-100-33/24
batteries, which have maybe a year or two left in their life. What he
would like to do is add a separate battery bank – perhaps a set of
LFPs (like SimpliPhi). He wants a set up where, when his Solar One
batteries are full, the excess voltage ‘automatically’ charges his
secondary battery bank.
I am wondering if a dump load controller would suffice (so when his
Solar One batteries are full, excess voltage is dumped to the
secondary battery bank), but I’m not getting much help from any
manufacturers as to what might work.Any suggestions?
