While I do not dispute Jerry’s comment except that it is not a software issue
but battery design incompatibility with a battery/not PV inverter (dc to dc
converter), my bigger frustration is being told by SMA that the introduction of
the BYD as a replacement for one of the three LG Resu units would solve the
shortcomings. It has not.

Wrenches

SMA storage only works with BYD, for what ever the reason (software) LG does
not work with the SMA and causes as l recall a glitch when charge to discharge
and back to charge.

Wanted to share my experience with the SMA SunnyBoyStorage (SBS) with the LG
and BYD battery combo.

For background, not until installation nearly a year back did we discover that
despite early marketing literature claims, the LG batteries would not recharge
during backup operations. This was because of the DC to DC converter inside the
LG that resulted in SBS losing necessary power during transitions between
charging and discharging. Me and another wrench pushed SMA hard and they agreed
to provide us at no cost a BYD battery which they said would be the solution
and to install that is one battery with LG the remaining two. (this was
previously a 3xLG system)

SMA stated that the BYD and its true 400V internals would provide the
continuity for the system to operate as first advertised.

The BYD certainly addressed the lights going out during backup ops but the two
remaining LG batteries just won’t recharge during backup operations. They will
discharge and discharge but no recharge from PV power during backup.

SMA will not even return emails at this point as I’ve inquired if there is
another setting to get the BYD and LG to co-exist. As we all know the SMA
parameters page is not the easiest to interpret and unfortunately there is not
documentation to explain the parameters such that we could make meaningful
adjustments.

I’m guessing the indemnity / no-sue paperwork that SMA insisted I sign before
they provided the BYD is their card to cease technical support…beware out
there. Whenever somebody says they have a better storage mousetrap I always
wonder if the system has truly been put through the paces and has necessary
tech support. I got burned by an up and coming storage/inverter system one time
so when SMA came along with SBS and ABU I thought I’d have the full force and
reputation of SMA to carry me into the future.
