Hi James -

That's interesting to hear about newer model shingles staying softer. We
work solely in the San Francisco Bay Area where heat isn't typically a big
problem, yet we still run into soft composition shingle issues on warmer
days, especially on new roofs. We use scraps of old carpet cut into 18"
strips and squares, and also use Yellow Spaghetti Mat:

It is a constant effort to keep reminding the crews to use roof protection
because it is a pain to install and doesn't have the same good grip as
composition shingles. However, as you know, it doesn't take much to damage
the roof. It is also good to train the crews on how to walk on roofs - make
sure that they don't twist their feet or slide their feet, both will wear
the granules off the shingles. Don't use heavy duty work boots - stick with
sport type shoes or light hiking shoes. Work boots (like the steel toe
type) will really damage a composition shingle roof fast. Sometimes we get
an extra early start and pull off by mid afternoon if it is really hot.
