Jeremy,
I think the strap-on ones you’re referring too are Korkers (sp?). They have a 
very strong Velcro bottom that you can change out from foam, a cleat (with 
little metal spikes that’s great for cedar or ice, and maybe a felt?
Yes, they are kind of big and klunky.
