Hi Carl -

V2G (Vehicle to Grid) is one of the most exciting areas of technology
coming down the pipes. It's easy to imagine a day where you can tap into
~100 kWh or more of storage sitting in your EV and benefit from
bi-directional charging with PV. I'm trying to get my head wrapped around
the standards and how the technology will likely roll out. Here is an
article that explains some of the basics:

I think we're at the mercy of the manufacturers to come out with products
that we can then work with. Ford apparently is teaming up with SunRun to
install what must be a Microgrid Interconnect Device (MID) and inverter for
the F150 Lightning. Other manufacturers will likely follow suit. I know
there's a lot of work going into the standards such as the CCS plug which
has J1772 and Quick charge. The Chademo standard came out with V2G built
into the standard, but apparently is falling out of favor. I'm a little out
of the loop on all of this, but am trying to learn.

The big question coming to mind that we should all be thinking about is
whether permanently installed Energy Storage Systems (ESS) vs V2G makes
more sense for our grid tied clients. Clearly there's not a whole lot we
can do until products are available on the market. But in the next 5 years?
There will be a lot of change. Tesla seems to be sticking with the
permanently installed ESS route with their Powerwall system. Ford really
let the cat out of the bag with their F150 Lightning announcement. Exciting
time ahead!
