It took some time digging into internet images but I found a YouTube
video of the same type of defect.

I can see that microcracks are the likely cause. The prevalence of 45
degree angles seems weird though. Monocrystalline cells should have a
random fracture direction.

so you can inspect them. While it looks like there has been some
localized heating on the traces, there isn't any evidence of damage on
the rear of the PV modules. These are on an off grid system charging
some 12-volt batteries. Thanks.
