I actually have (had - it was years ago) a framework that did just
this. I was booed off the NUG by people who wouldn't touch it for
fear of being sued by Adobe, who has patents on that style of
interface. They successfully sued Macromedia a number of years ago
over Macromedia's use of those interface elements in Freehand and
Dreamweaver.
So it's gathering dust on my hard drive. :) I believe I build it in
RB 2.1 or 4.5.
After a few people bugged me about this, I dug around and found the
demo I built using RB 4.5 (alpha!). Surprisingly, it still works (that
is, it works as well as it ever did) and you can download it here, for
OS X, Windows, and Classic:

These are compiled applications, not classes, but they do demonstrate
the technique I developed. Some visual artifacts are visible, but
nothing horrible, considering the age of the demo - around 3 years old.
Any feedback is certainly welcome. I didn't have any plans of
resurrecting this project, but if enough people express interest I'd
consider doing so.
