I think what I'm really looking for is a combination of ideas here.
I'd like to render one image as the background and like Joe said, the
knob shadows will remain realistic, since shadows don't change as you
rotate. Then, I'd like a small indicator like Phil mentioned that
does the actual rotation.
I don't believe anyone has mentioned this, but perhaps a little bit
of picture layering might help you.
Specifically, you could add a masked picture of a shadow on top of
the knob art itself. This way, even details such as position
indicator dots will fall into shadow as the knob is rotated (if the
dots are on the knob, that is).
So this adds one static shadow art plus however you decide to do the
knob art, which I feel is easier to maintain should things change. If
you're really clever, the shadow art can even include static highlights.
If your knob is smooth, the only indication that it's been turned is
usually some sort of position indicator line or dot. With a little
bit of math, you could update the indicator's position by redrawing
the indicator over a static knob art.
So, say, a canvas-based knob might layer three pictures (in order
from top to bottom layer):
1. Static shadow/highlight alpha
2. position indicator
3. Static knob art
This reduces the problem to updating layer 2 and avoids having to pre-
render lots of knob positions.
