Hi Everyone,

I'm aware that when reading data into an RB application from an external
source (database, file etc) it is neccassary to 'tell' RB what character
encoding the data uses. This may be achieved using the DefineEncoding
method which then allows RB to convert the encoding to its internal UTF8
format. However, figuring out the text encoding of the external sources is
turning out to be a little elusive.

I read data from two external sources, (on a Mac using OSX),

a) From a FileMaker database via
    1) AppleScripts
    2) ODBC
b) Email from
     1) An email server
     2) An email client

Can anyone give me a few hints on how I go about figuring out the text
encoding for these sources? For instance does FileMaker dole out data in
UTF8? Does an email server assume ASCII?

Thanks in advance for any help given.
