I don't see any secure effect in the way a database admin will let direct port access from outside (including using the new auth system). If you are concerned by security, you can also create an ssl tunel in order to securely deal with MySQL Server. Most internet hosting services refuse to provide direct port access from the outside anyway.

I'm not saying that this is "cool" connecting to MySQL 4.1.X -> 5.X.X with the "old" auth system: I'm just saying "It works", as I do it everyday using the current RB MySQL plugin.
