I'm not saying that this is "cool" connecting to MySQL 4.1.X -> 5.X.X with the "old" auth system: I'm just saying "It works", as I do it everyday using the current RB MySQL plugin.

And I've not said that it doesn't work, just that there are possible reasons that you may NOT be allowed or able to do it. If you administer the server do what you want. And yes, the set up you showed will work.

But, if you don't administer the server and the DBA wont' use the old password scheme you may need an alternative that does use the new scheme.

And that rules out the existing mySQL plugin.
