If I have a group 3d oriented at 0,0,0, and want to rotate it 90 degrees left or right (about the Y axis), I had assumed I would set its orientation.y to pi/2.0 or -Pi/2.0.

No, that's not what quaternions mean. The easiest way to do this 90 degree yaw would be to call Yaw( pi/2 or -pi/2 ) on the Group3D itself.

If you want to set an absolute orientation, then call obj.orientation.SetRotateAboutAxis.

The LR entry on Quaternions actually has a pretty decent explanation of what they are and how to use them (lifted from the Rb3D FAQ).
